Renvyle Castle, a 13th / 14th
century tower house, is said to have been started by a
member of the Joyce Clan. Legend has it that there was a
wedding taking place of one of the Joyce's, when it was
interrupted by a rival family, the
O'Flaherty's, and the
guests were massacred all but one that escaped to give the
recount of the attack, the castle then being taken over by
the O'Flaherty's. |

Renvyle Castle on the
northern shore of
Connemara faces the Atlantic. It was an O'Flaherty castle, passing into the hands of the
Blakes for
a time.
In and around 1546 Donal O'Flaherty married Grace O'Malley (Granuaile)
the famous sea queen, and they were said to have lived at
Renvyle Castle, when she was not at sea. Legend has it,
Granuaile partly demolished the Castle by a shot from a
cannon at sea. Grainuaile is now buried in a castle in
Louisburgh, just across the water from Renvyle Peninsula.
